Essure™

A new method of permanent contraception

A new method of permanent birth control is now available from Dr. Randell. Essure™ blocks the fallopian tubes to permanently prevent pregnancy.

Essure™ is similar to other methods of sterilization such as tubal ligation (having your tubes tied) or vasectomy, but doesn't require a surgical incision.

The procedure involves placing a small, flexible device called a micro-insert into each Fallopian tube. Once they are in place, your body tissue grows into the micro-inserts, blocking the fallopian tubes with scar tissue.

This is intended to prevent sperm from fertilizing the egg, thereby preventing pregnancy.

Benefits

  • General anaesthesia is not required during the procedure, but is routinely offered to the woman as an option
  • There is a fast recovery time, with patients generally being able to go home 45 minutes after the procedure
  • The procedure only takes about 15-20 minutes
  • There will be no scars because the procedure doesn't involve cutting into the skin

Precautions

  • This procedure is not reversible. It is only appropriate for you if you are sure you don't want any more children
  • About 10% of women are not able to have the inserts placed in both fallopian tubes because of anatomical differences
  • The micro-insert may be misplaced
  • There is a small chance of perforation of the fallopian tubes or uterus
  • There is a three month waiting period in which you won't be protected against pregnancy
  • It is necessary to have an x-ray at 3 months to ensure the tube is blocked

If you are considering any form of sterilization there are many issues to think about. Can you imagine any changes in your current circumstances that might result in you wanting a future pregnancy? Most of us don't like to think of relationship breakdown or the death of a partner or child, but these things can happen. People also develop new relationships and might want to have a child with their new partner.
