Kit helps predict best time to conceive By Diana Davis, Channel 2 Action News health reporter Ovulationtester.com March 21, 2002 -- There's a new way for women to know the best time of the month to get pregnant. The Food and Drug Administration has just approved the sale of the first ever saliva-based ovulation test. The device allows women to predict when they're fertile. The at-home kit called the TCI ovulation tester should be on drug store shelves any day now. Unlike other ovulation tests that require urine to work, this one uses saliva. The manufacturers are hoping that means women will find it easier to use. Having her first child, Bryan, wasn't easy for Caroline Reed. It took three years of trying, and hundreds of dollars spent on at-home ovulation kits. "I would go through one, two maybe three kits a month, at 25 30 bucks a pop," said Reed. "It was just getting to be very expensive." Carolyn's now trying to have a second child. She's tracking her fertility with the new reusable ovulation kit that tests saliva. Unlike older kits that measure a hormone called LH, the saliva tester measures estrogen which surges at ovulation. That's the ideal time to conceive -- just a couple of days each month. "About two thirds of women have no idea when is the maximum fertility period and by using these kits they can predict it by seeing the change in their ferning pattern," said Dr. Michael Randell, an ob/gyn. What's a ferning pattern? It occurs when the saliva of an about-to ovulate woman dries, the salt in the saliva leaves a crystal pattern called ferning. If there's only little dots, ovulation isn't near. As the dots start to form chains, ovulation is getting closer. Once true ferning appears, it's the best time to conceive. Once women collect saliva on a brush and put it on the slide in a round disc, they can track their ferning pattern through the microscope and eyepiece that's included in the kit. The kits cost $59.95 -- more than a one-time kit, but again this one is re-usable. Within the next few weeks you will be able to buy it in the drug store.
